This reminds me of the skeletons of two lovers archaeologists unearthed near Herculaneum. It was featured in National Geographic a few years back. The only link I could find relatively quickly that had a photo was this:

That's a great find. That picture is vaguely familiar to me, but I'm not sure from where. I love how intertwined the arms and legs are.

So, the painting in this post is actually a direct takeoff of this burial in Romito, a cave in southern Italy. While in my head, the painting is of a male and female couple snuggling, the skeletons in the photograph are actually a woman and a young male dwarf. They're buried under an engraving of a bull, and from what I read, this suggests some kind of ritual sacrifice. Archaeologists call the skeletons Romito 1 and Romito 2.
